How to separate schoolwork from entertainment, protect sleep and play, and build transparent boundaries around games, video, and first devices.
Age guidance is a planning aid, not a parenting grade or clinical threshold. Separate entertainment from school, communication, creative, health, and assistive uses; protect necessary access; and interpret evidence within the child, family, culture, resources, and week in front of you.
§I.What changes in the school-age years
This guide uses school age for roughly the elementary years, commonly ages 5 to 12; older children at the edge of that range also benefit from tween and teen guidance. Children become more rule-based thinkers, can discuss feelings and fairness, and can participate in a family plan. They are also still developing impulse control, risk judgment, advertising literacy, and the ability to resist designs built to extend engagement. Adult structure remains developmentally appropriate.
The AAP's 2026 policy gives roughly one to two hours a day—or sometimes more—as an example range for entertainment media in school-age children and teens. It does not declare two hours safe in every context or three hours harmful in every context. A video call with a deployed parent, a creative project, homework, an accessibility tool, and an endless clip feed require different decisions. The useful limit is the one that protects the child's functioning and can be held consistently.
Start with what must fit: sufficient sleep, school participation, movement, meals, household responsibilities, reading and creative play, in-person connection, and time without programmed stimulation. Then define where optional media belongs. If a child's sleep, attendance, learning, health, friendships, or family participation is deteriorating, revisit the pattern regardless of the displayed total.
§II.Separate screen purposes before setting a limit

A one- to two-hour entertainment range may be a workable beginning, not the only acceptable plan. Weekend and school-night limits can differ. State the reason in concrete terms: devices charge at 8 because your body needs sleep, or gaming comes after homework and outdoor time. Children are more likely to learn self-management from a boundary tied to a visible need than from a mysterious number imposed as punishment.
§III.Design the after-school sequence before debating minutes
After school, many children are hungry, socially tired, and ready for an absorbing break. Media may provide recovery, but starting with a highly engaging feed or game can make homework, meals, or movement much harder to begin. The solution does not have to be a universal no screens until everything is done rule. Find the sequence that matches the child.
Some children do best with snack, ten minutes of connection, movement, homework, and then media. Others need a short, timed media break before they can reengage. A child with ADHD, autism, anxiety, pain, or sensory overload may need a more explicit decompression plan. Test one order for a week and track start-up, conflict, mood, and bedtime rather than assuming the child's difficulty is defiance.
- Write or picture the sequence where the child can see it.
- Use a bounded activity for the break, not an endless feed.
- State the endpoint and next action before media begins.
- Place the homework materials, snack, shoes, or alternative activity within easy reach.
- Leave margin; overscheduling every minute can make a screen the only private recovery space.
If adults need uninterrupted work time, name that constraint and select the safest, most predictable content available. A realistic plan is more protective than a strict rule that repeatedly collapses.
§IV.Review content, design, privacy, and persuasion
School-age children can sound technologically fluent while lacking adult judgment. They may navigate menus quickly but misunderstand advertising, data collection, manipulated images, risky requests, or how public and persistent a message can become. Preview the service and check age rating, chat, user-generated content, ads, purchases, location, camera, microphone, contacts, and recommendation settings. Use parental controls as friction, not as a guarantee.
Teach digital literacy in ordinary conversations. Ask who made the content, what the creator wants the viewer to do, how a platform makes money, what might be edited or omitted, and whether a claim can be checked elsewhere. Point out ads and influencer marketing rather than assuming a child recognizes them. Avoid secret surveillance when possible; tell the child what adults can review and why. Safety monitoring can be firm without pretending the child has privacy that the system does not provide.
Create a no-punishment first response for unsafe encounters: You can show me a creepy message, sexual image, threat, hateful post, or request for secrecy. I will help first. Consequences can be considered after safety is restored. If the child encounters self-harm, eating-disorder, discriminatory, sexual, or threatening content, preserve relevant evidence without redistributing it, block and report where appropriate, and seek qualified support.
§V.Judge games and video by the whole experience
Games can support competence, imagination, problem-solving, persistence, and friendship. Video can teach a skill or provide shared humor. Risks depend on more than genre: age-inappropriate content, strangers, harassment, gambling-like rewards, purchases, endless rounds, competitive arousal, and group pressure may change the effect. Sit with the child periodically, play or watch, and ask what they enjoy, what feels unfair, and what makes stopping difficult.
Use natural boundaries when possible: one match, one episode, one build goal, or a known save point. Online teams may depend on the child, so a rigid mid-match shutdown can harm peers and invite conflict. Agree that no new round starts after the cutoff and build a small buffer for saving or saying goodbye. That respects social responsibility without surrendering the bedtime boundary.
For an elementary-age child, treat an independent social-media account as a high-supervision decision rather than a routine milestone, even if peers claim otherwise. A platform's minimum age is a legal or company boundary, not proof of developmental readiness. Messaging with known contacts may meet a social need with fewer features, but still requires rules about kindness, privacy, group chats, images, nighttime access, and bringing problems to an adult. Do not remove safe peer connection casually when a more targeted restriction will address the risk.
§VI.Keep school screens from turning into continuous partial attention
Required device use can expand into entertainment through tabs, alerts, videos, or chats. The child's struggle may reflect a distracting environment rather than laziness. Set up one-task conditions: close unrelated tabs, put the phone elsewhere, silence alerts, use full-screen mode, and decide the specific stopping point. A visible checklist helps the child see progress without repeatedly opening the school portal.
Breaks should change posture and visual distance. Stand, stretch, drink water, look out a window, or walk briefly rather than switching from an assignment to a short-video feed. This gives attention a true reset. If the child needs text-to-speech, speech-to-text, captioning, enlarged text, or another support, preserve it. Accessibility tools are not distractions merely because they are digital.
Do not solve excessive school-device demands solely by removing the child's recreation. Ask the teacher which work must be digital, whether notifications can be reduced, and how much time an assignment is expected to take. Persistent difficulty beginning, sustaining attention, reading, organizing, or finishing deserves educational or clinical inquiry; a screen-time rule cannot diagnose or treat ADHD, a learning disability, anxiety, or another condition.
§VII.Protect sleep and movement with environmental rules
Screen use can delay bedtime because the child keeps engaging, because friends or notifications arrive, or because exciting content leaves the body activated. Light is one mechanism, but not the only one. The most reliable household protection is behavioral: choose a stopping time that leaves room for the bedtime routine, charge personal devices outside the sleeping area, silence notifications, and avoid treating the bed as a gaming or homework station.
Start with the last hour before sleep when feasible. If schoolwork must occur late, use only the necessary device, reduce interruptions, and move it out when finished. A 2024 expert consensus concluded that screen use generally impairs sleep health for children and adolescents and that content before sleep matters, while also noting gaps in causal evidence and individual variation. The rule should therefore protect the opportunity to sleep rather than promise a cure.
Movement is not merely compensation for screen time. It supports health, attention, mood, skill, and social life in its own right. A family trial found that a short, substantial reduction in recreational screen media increased children's nonsedentary activity, although the intensive intervention does not directly specify an ordinary long-term limit. Crowd in accessible movement the child likes—walking, active chores, playground time, dance, sports, wheeling, or adapted activity—rather than using exercise as punishment for media.
§VIII.Decide on a first phone by function and readiness
Research does not establish one correct age for a smartphone. Begin with the job the device must do: calls after practice, location coordination, medical monitoring, messaging relatives, or peer contact. Then choose the least complex device that reliably meets that job. A basic phone, watch, shared family phone, or smartphone with limited apps may be a better first step than immediate access to an entire digital ecosystem.
Readiness includes more than remembering the device. Consider whether the child generally tells the truth when something goes wrong, seeks adult help, handles peer conflict, follows existing media boundaries, understands basic privacy, and can leave a device outside the bedroom. Adult readiness matters too: who will configure accounts, approve downloads and purchases, monitor contact, update settings, and respond to mistakes?
Write the conditions before purchase. Specify where the phone sleeps, who may be contacted, which apps are available, whether location is shared and with whom, what adults may inspect, and how independence can increase. Review at a scheduled date. Not yet should include another way to meet the child's legitimate safety or social need and a path for reconsideration, not an indefinite dismissal.
§IX.Build a family plan children can understand
- Map the week. Place sleep, school, meals, movement, care tasks, and relationships before optional media.
- Separate categories. Protect school, communication, creative, and accessibility uses while defining the entertainment window.
- Choose two anchors. Common starting points are device-free meals and devices outside bedrooms.
- Reduce design pressure. Disable autoplay, alerts, purchases, and recommendation features that do not serve the child's goal.
- Invite child input. Let the child help choose timing and alternatives while adults retain responsibility for safety and health.
- Plan exceptions. State how travel, illness, holidays, group projects, and special events will work.
- Review in one week. Examine sleep, school, movement, connection, mood, and conflict; revise the rule that did not serve its purpose.
Seek professional help when media use is associated with persistent sleep loss, school refusal or decline, withdrawal from valued activities or relationships, unsafe contact, major mood or behavior change, repeated deception with serious consequences, or dangerous conflict around limits. These signs call for assessment of the child, family, school, and digital context. A high hour count alone is not a diagnosis.

01How many hours should a school-age child have?
The AAP's 2026 policy offers roughly one to two hours—or sometimes more—as an example entertainment-media boundary, with variation by child and family. Separate school and necessary access, then protect sleep, learning, movement, relationships, and safety. The observed effects matter more than a universal cutoff.
02Does school Chromebook time count?

03Should my child finish all homework before gaming?
That sequence works for some children but not all. A short, bounded decompression period may help a tired or neurodivergent child reengage. Test a visible routine for a week and judge homework start-up, conflict, mood, and bedtime. Avoid endless feeds during a break.
04Is gaming with friends better than watching videos?
It may provide social connection, cooperation, or mastery, but the specific content, contacts, purchases, design, intensity, and after-effect still matter. Join periodically, review safety features, and use natural endpoints. Do not assume every social game is safe or every video is passive.
05What is the right age for a first smartphone?
There is no research-backed universal age. Define the need, assess child and adult readiness, and choose the least complex device that meets the function. Establish accounts, privacy, contact, bedtime, download, purchase, and review rules before the device becomes routine.
06Should devices be allowed in the bedroom?
Charging phones and tablets outside the bedroom is a strong default because it reduces bedtime delay and notifications. If a device serves a medical, communication, or accessibility purpose, preserve that function and work with the relevant care team on the safest setup.
