These categories overlap, but they are not duplicates. “I like analyzing systems” is an interest. “I need predictable hours” is a condition or value. “I can model data in Python” is a skill. “I usually prefer long, uninterrupted concentration” is a tendency. “I cannot relocate this year” is a constraint. Precision makes the decision easier to test.
Interests
Use interests to open doors, not close the case
Vocational interests organize what kinds of activities people find attractive. Holland's RIASEC framework describes six broad patterns: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional. The practical advantage is that the same vocabulary appears in O*NET occupation records, so an interest result can become a search key for real work.
Interests matter: meta-analytic evidence connects interest congruence with performance and persistence. But the relationship is not a personal guarantee, and interests do not contain values, ability, working conditions, opportunity, or the cost of entry. Two occupations can share an Investigative component while differing sharply in autonomy, social contact, schedule, training, and market access.
Interpretation rule: read an interest code as “activities worth investigating,” not “jobs you are meant to do.” Then inspect the actual tasks and environments behind the titles.
Values
Values become useful when translated into observable conditions
Abstract words such as impact, freedom, security, creativity, status, and balance can mean different things to different people. Translate each important value into a condition you could verify. “Autonomy” might mean control over method, schedule, priorities, or client choice. “Security” might mean stable income, portable skills, health insurance, or low layoff risk.
Then distinguish a minimum condition from a preference. A minimum condition screens options out. A preference influences the ranking. This prevents every appealing value from becoming a non-negotiable and makes tradeoffs explicit.
Value-to-condition translation
- Name the value
- Example: flexibility.
- Define the visible condition
- Example: I can shift start and end times by two hours on most days.
- Set the minimum
- Example: at least three flexible days per week.
- Choose the evidence
- Example: written policy plus reports from two people in the role.
Skills
Separate current skill from transferable evidence and learning distance
A skill inventory should not freeze you in your past. It should show three things: what you can already demonstrate, what underlying capability transfers to a new context, and how large the remaining learning distance is.
“Project management” is too broad. Evidence is more useful: coordinated six contributors across two time zones, resolved dependencies, maintained a risk log, and delivered against a fixed deadline. For a new path, identify which parts transfer, which tools or domain knowledge are missing, and how you could create a work sample before investing in a full credential.
- Demonstrated: you have an artifact, outcome, observation, or credible reference.
- Adjacent: the underlying operation transfers, but the context or tool changes.
- Unproven: you believe you could learn it but have not yet tested the claim.
- Costly gap: the path requires substantial time, money, licensing, or supervised experience.
Personality
Use personality to design work, not assign occupations
Broad personality traits can help you anticipate patterns: how much stimulation you seek, how consistently you organize, how readily you engage unfamiliar people, or how strongly you react to stress. They are more useful for questions such as “Which version of this role might suit my operating style?” than “Which job belongs to my type?”
The same occupation can exist in a quiet specialist team, a rapid client-facing agency, a regulated institution, or a self-directed practice. Environment and task design may matter as much as title. Personality also changes across adulthood and adapts to roles; treat a result as a tendency with context, not an identity boundary.
Better question: “What work conditions help this tendency function well, and what supports reduce predictable friction?” That produces design choices instead of type-based exclusion.
Constraints
Constraints are part of fit, not an embarrassing footnote
Location, health, disability, immigration status, caregiving, transportation, schedule, income floor, benefits, debt, discrimination risk, and training access can dominate a decision. Ignoring them creates options that are emotionally attractive but operationally unavailable.
Classify each constraint as fixed for now, negotiable, uncertain, or changeable with a plan. Then ask when it should be reviewed. A current constraint may rule out an immediate move without ruling out a long-term direction. This distinction protects both realism and possibility.
The contradiction protocol
When the inputs disagree, do not average them
- State the contradiction precisely. “I am interested in counseling tasks, but the training time conflicts with my income floor” is actionable. “The results conflict” is not.
- Check whether the constructs actually disagree. Interest in a topic can coexist with dislike of the most common work environment. A weak skill can coexist with strong learning motivation.
- Protect hard constraints first. Safety, legal feasibility, essential income, health, and caregiving are not weights to average away.
- Design another version of the option. Change the setting, role scope, employment arrangement, sequence, or time horizon before discarding the entire direction.
- Run the experiment that targets the disagreement. If you doubt the task, try the task. If you doubt the environment, talk to people in several environments. If you doubt the learning path, complete a small authentic module.
- Record the tradeoff. No option maximizes every dimension. Make the accepted cost visible and choose a review trigger.
Worked example
A “creative” person comparing two very different paths
Suppose Maya reports Artistic and Investigative interests. She values autonomy and public usefulness, has strong research and writing evidence, tends to prefer focused work over constant networking, and cannot accept a two-year income interruption.
A generic match engine might return dozens of “creative” occupations. The separated inputs suggest a better process: explore paths that combine inquiry and creation; screen out routes requiring an unfunded full-time credential; compare environments by interruption and client demands; then test two plausible tasks—perhaps a research-communication project and a user-research interview synthesis.
The output is not “Maya should become X.” It is a smaller set of plausible hypotheses, explicit constraints, and evidence that can change the ranking.
