How the directory works

Last reviewed

Claimed and coach listings show only after we check them in public records, and we check them again every year. NPI Registry records are shown as the registry holds them. No one pays for a place, and nothing about you or your results goes with a click.

Who is listed

Two kinds of professionals, searched separately:

  • Licensed clinicians: counselors, psychologists, clinical social workers and marriage and family therapists in every state, each with an active record in the federal NPI Registry and a state license number on record. A state board licenses them to assess and treat mental health concerns, within the scope their state allows.
  • Credentialed coaches: career, executive and leadership, ADHD, wellbeing, parenting, relationship, and burnout and stress coaches with a current credential from the International Coaching Federation (ICF), the Board Certified Coach (BCC) from NBCC’s affiliate CCE, or the National Career Development Association (NCDA), who list themselves through our form.

How we check listings

Before a claimed or coach profile shows, we check the clinician’s NPI Registry record and their license in the state board’s public lookup, or the coach’s credential with its issuer, and we confirm the profile with them at a phone number or email address from a public record, so no one can claim a record that is not theirs. We keep each check with its day, the record it was made in and who on our team made it.

A checked profile shows Verified with the month of its checks, comes first in the searches it fits and takes the place of the clinician’s registry record. We check again every year, and a profile whose check is more than a year old stops showing until we check it again.

A claimed profile carries the name and credential from the clinician’s NPI Registry record, which the form does not let them change: a change they ask for comes to us, and shows only once we have checked it. A profile’s photo shows only once we have checked the profile.

Where records come from

Clinician records come from the NPI Registry, the federal list of National Provider Identifiers that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services publishes for public use. A record shows what the clinician reported there: their name and credential, their profession and specialty, the state and number of a license on record, and the city, ZIP code and phone of their practice. We never show a street address, we add nothing the record does not say, and we read the registry again every day.

A record there does not show that a license is current, so check a license in your state board’s lookup before you book. Each record links to the official one and shows the month it was last updated. If a record is yours, you can claim it to add your profile, or have it removed from this directory.

Coaching or therapy?

Coaches help with goals, habits and decisions. They are not licensed to diagnose or treat a mental health condition, and a coaching credential is not a license. If you are looking for treatment, choose a licensed clinician or ask your doctor. SAMHSA’s free FindTreatment.gov lists licensed treatment facilities in the US.

How to choose

Before you book, ask whether they work with what you want help with, and how; their fees, whether they take your insurance, and whether they see people online or in person; and, for a clinician, whether their license is current in the state where you live. A first conversation is the best test of fit.

Nothing here is an endorsement or a referral: we check the licenses and credentials of the profiles we list, not the quality of anyone’s care, and we show NPI Registry records as the registry holds them.

Your privacy

Nothing about you or your results goes with a click. A profile’s links point to lifebylogic.com/api/directory/go/ followed by the profile’s fixed name and site or phone, and from there you go straight to the professional’s own website or phone with no referrer, so they are not told which page you came from, what you searched for or what result you saw. A registry record’s phone number is the registry’s own, and calling it tells us nothing.

What you search for, the place, the name and the filters, goes only to our directory, which asks the NPI Registry’s public search for the profession, the place and the name, and never anything about you. It is kept nowhere but our host’s short-term request logs, and it never goes into the page’s address or our analytics. We count only daily totals of how many times each profile was shown and how many people followed its links. We never relay a message: you contact the professional directly. Our Privacy Policy has the details.

How results are ordered

Checked profiles come first, then NPI Registry records, each in an order that changes every day, so no one is always first. No one pays for a place. If profiles can later pay for a Featured place, as the terms below allow, those will show first in the searches they fit and be labeled Featured, and every profile will keep its Verified check.

For professionals

If you are a licensed clinician with an NPI, your record may already be here: you can claim it to add your profile, or take it out of this directory. If you are a coach with a current credential, you can list yourself. Listing is free.

List yourself as a professional List yourself as a coach Remove a record

These are the terms every claimed or coach profile accepts:

  1. Your listing is free, and you can remove it at any time without charge.
  2. Once a typical listing gets 5 or more contact clicks a month for three months running, we may offer a monthly fee for a Featured place: listings that pay it show first in the searches they fit, labeled Featured, and the others stay listed free after them. We will write to you with the price at least 30 days before any fee starts.
  3. If you are listed before any fee starts, you are a founding lister and keep a lower price for life.
  4. Before your listing shows, we check your NPI Registry record and your license in your state board’s public lookup, or your coaching credential with its issuer, and we confirm the listing with you at a phone number or email address from a public record. We check again every year. Your listing shows Verified with the month of its checks, and a listing whose check is more than a year old is hidden until we check it again.
  5. If you are a clinician, your listing takes the place of your NPI Registry record in the directory, shows your NPI number and links to your record in the registry.
  6. Your listing links to your own website or phone. We never relay messages, and nothing a reader writes, answers or scores reaches you or us through the directory.
  7. Each month we email you how many times your listing was shown and how many readers followed its contact links, as totals only.
  8. We use your email address only for those numbers and for messages about your listing, and never show it.
  9. You keep your profile accurate and are responsible for your services, your fees and following your profession’s rules, and you tell us if your license or credential changes. A listing is not an endorsement.
  10. We may decline or remove a listing that is inaccurate or no longer meets these terms.
